The Cornwall King of the agricultural garage-gypsy sound backed by his screaming dukes of skiffle!

Described by angry locals as the bastard son of Waits, Strummer, Reinhardt and Rachmaninov, Julian Gaskell’s music over the last 20 years has followed a wayward path of withering agricultural-folk, klezmer accordion, overly-lyrical punk, gypsy-jazz guitar, tangos, waltzes, rhumbas and skiffled-up boogie-woogie piano.

The Ragged Trousered Philanthropists, named after the Robert Tressell book, are Julian’s long-suffering band, ft. Thomas Pooley Tolkien Sharpe on banjo, piano, mandolin, vocals
Cally Gibson on viola and violin
Nigel Parsons on bass
Matthew Collington on drums

“Gaskell really is an original – declamatory, vulpine vocals ranting and roaring his splendidly acrid, protestful lyrics over a glorious, urgent ramshackle garage blend of Balkan-Klezmerisms and French gypsy cafebilly” – fRoots

Support comes from Joplin Parnell. Weaving a rich tapestry of New Orleans Rhythm & Blues and Brazilian Choro, New York Stride and French Musette with a Tango or two thrown in for good measure, Joplin draws influence from the full breadth of his musical heritage, imparting a deep soulful sensibility onto everything he does.
