Jamboree welcomes the popular London clubnight Des Was a Bowie Fan, indiepop, new wave, 80s synth pop, 60s soul and rock’n’roll dancing through the early hours, with live musical guests the post-punk / DIY Pop musician and feminist author Helen McCookerybook and Bristol’s The Charlie Tipper Conspiracy, celebrating their joint single, a cover of The Velvet Underground’s ‘Femme Fatale’.
Helen McCookerybook was a John Peel favourite through the ’80s and ’90s, singing and playing bass in Brighton outsider indiepop/punk bands Jody and the Hooligans, The Smartees and The Chefs before forming her own sumptuous, country-inflected Helen and the Horns. She has more recently helped write women back into the official history of punk with her book ‘The Lost Women Of Rock: Female Musicians Of The Punk Era’, which has interviews with The Mo-dettes, The Slits and Dolly Mixture amongst others. Helen’s songs are beacons of outside of everything lyricism, and her set shall consist of songs from her new LP ‘The Sea’ and classics of yore.
The Charlie Tipper Conspiracy are a sweet-shuffling indiepop band with a roaring jangle and skewering keys and horns, creating their own cuttingly romantic, melancholy sound in the vein of The June Brides. They formed in 2013 as The Charlie Tipper Experiment, releasing an album and accompanying singles, including the ace ‘Ride Out’, via Breaking Down Recordings. A further two EPs full of the sweet stuff and the new single with Helen followed as part of the new Conspiracy. All proceeds from the sale of ‘Femme Fatale’ (linked to above) go to Refugee Aid. The band’s new ‘Network’ EP is released on May 12th.
